26-year-old Joy Logan of Bay Minette, Alabama was visiting her aunt in Mobile. They went to visit a family member in the hospital and her aunt told Joy that because it was late, she should spend the night in Mobile instead of driving home. Joy took her aunt's key and went to the house. Meanwhile, Joy's cousin, 18-year-old Daniel Johnson was home alone, not knowing his cousin was coming over. He heard a noise, thought it was a burglar, went and got his gun and fatally shot his cousin.
The Mobile County Sheriff's Office said there was "no evidence the shooting was anything other than an accidental death." As is standard procedure, the case will be presented to a grand jury.

In nursing home at age 26 due to unintentional shooting
"It's a depressing place to live," says Adam. "I'm stuck here. You don't have no privacy at all. People die around you all the time. It starts to really get depressing because all you're seeing is negative, negative, negative."
The number of under-65 residents in nursing homes has risen about 22 percent in the past eight years. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid estimate about 203,000 people under the age of 65 are currently in nursing homes.
"Its lonely here," Adam says, as a single tear drips from his eye.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and the families of this horrible tragedy.

Man taken off life support, dies after unintentionally shooting self in the head
29-year-old Jared Walker, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was showing his gun to friends on New Year's Day. He had used the gun for target practice a few days earlier and even though he unloaded the gun a bullet was left in the chamber. While showing off the gun he unintentionally discharged the firearm and shot himself in the head.
Jared was taken to the hospital where he was put on life support. Doctors told the family he was in a vegetative state with "zero percent" chance of recovery. Jared was removed from life support yesterday morning and died soon after. It wasn't possible for Jared to be an organ donor as his family had hoped.

10-year-old gets guns for Christmas, 8 days later he shoots and kills his mother
A 10-year-old Holmesville, Ohio boy is in custody, suspected of shooting his mother to death. 46-year-old Deborah McVay was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head Sunday night.
Four guns were found in the boy's bedroom. On his bed were the .22-caliber rifle believed to be the weapon that killed his mother and a 12-gauge shotgun. A gun rack mounted on the wall had two more .22-caliber rifles. Family members told police the guns were a Christmas present from the boy's grandfather.
"It's not unusual for boys of that age to hunt and shoot," said the County Sheriff's Chief Deputy, "I think it's unusual that those weapons were permitted to be in the boy's bedroom."
Police are not saying if they think the shooting was unintentional or not but the County prosecutor said authorities do not plan to prosecute the boy as an adult.

Stray bullets fly into homes: one incident in Massachusetts, one in Alabama
18-year-old Wayne Moore of Mobile, Alabama was lying in bed New Year's Eve, watching television when he heard a loud pop and found himself covered in shards of glass. A bullet had just come flying through his window. Fortunately, Wayne was not injured. Police believe the bullet came from the gun of someone shooting in the air to celebrate the New Year.
Mobile is plagued by residents who continue to shoot guns in the air on New Year's, even though police issue reminders that falling bullets can be deadly. Last year a 7-year-old Mobile girl was struck in the leg by a stray bullet from such gunfire.
Meanwhile, in Lynn, Massachusetts, 55-year-old Cheryl Marino was getting ready for work New Year's Day when a bullet came through her window and hit her in the chest. Police said that prior to the shooting there had been some sort of disturbance outside Cheryl's house, but she was not involved in the incident. Cheryl was taken to a nearby hospital where she is expected to survive.
"I was shaking because this could happen to anybody," commented one of her neighbors.

Man unintentionally shot and killed at annual neighborhood New Year's Eve party
35-year-old Jose Ramirez was attending the annual neighborhood New Year's Eve party at his neighbor's house in Niles, Michigan. Shortly after midnight Niles and a group of friends had just finished some beer and a game of pool. According to his 16-year-old daughter, who was also at the party, "They were all in the garage and they were looking at this pistol and all of a sudden, we heard the gunshot go off."
His wife, Irene, recalls what happened next, "He started bleeding and everybody started screaming and then he looked at me and he put his hand on his chest and fell right to the ground."
Jose was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. He leaves behind a wife and four daughters, the youngest only seven months old.
The neighbor who fired the shot is being held in jail awaiting charges. While police continue to investigate the case they do not believe the shooting was intentional.
