5-year-old shot dead by stray bullet while eating breakfast

5-year-old Payton Benson, of Omaha, Nebraska, was inside her home, eating breakfast, when she was struck by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting.  Payton was taken to the local hospital where she died of her injuries.

According to police, no one in Payton's house was the intended target.  The bullet was reportedly meant for someone standing on the street and was fired from a city block away.

Police have not made any arrests in the shooting but say they will "leave no stone unturned to solve this homicide."

According to a neighbor, "What I heard was just massive amounts of gunfire. Both guns had to be completely unloaded.  Uh, it both guns were very large guns. They weren't small guns."

Man target practicing inside his trailer unintentionally shoots neighbor

30-year-old Trent Kowalski, of Columbus, Nebraska, was target practicing inside his residence at Collegeview Trailer Park.

According to reports, Kowalski was shooting a .22-caliber rifle inside his home when a bullet exited the residence and struck 57-year-old Mark Foxvog in the leg.

Foxvog, who lives next door to Kowalski, was inside his home at the time of the shooting.  He was taken to the local hospital where he was treated and released.

Kowalski was arrested and charged with third-degree assault.

Man unintentionally shoots self in supermarket parking lot

72-year-old Ronye McKay of Omaha, Nebraska was walking into the Super Saver supermarket in Omaha when the handgun he was carrying fell out of his pocket. When the gun hit the pavement it discharged. The bullet struck McKay in the calf. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
McKay did not comment on why he felt he needed to carry a loaded, hidden gun with him while grocery shopping. Police report that he does have a valid permit to carry the weapon but note that McKay did not have the gun in a holster but had simply stuck the gun into his pants pocket.

Police say man who claims he was shot outside of a bar actually unintentionally shot himself

29-year-old Isacc Grell of Omaha, Nebraska told police he was in his vehicle in a parking lot outside of a bar Friday night when an unknown man came up and shot him. But police are now saying that Grell apparently shot himself. Grell was shot in the leg and went back to the bar to ask for help. He was taken to the local hospital where he is listed in serious condition, though his injuries are not life threatening.
Police say Grell was intoxicated and uncooperative when asked for additional details about what happened. They are treating this as an accidental, self-inflicted shooting with a shotgun.

Son of Nebraska's lieutenant governor unintentionally shoots himself in the face

21-year-old Joel Sheehy, son of Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, was handling a handgun he owns when the gun unintentionally discharged. According to a statement, "the bullet entered Joel's right front cheek and exited behind his right ear. He is under medical supervision and in stable condition. He will undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon to repair facial fractures."
Joel is a senior at the University of Nebraska where he is studying biotechnology. According to his Facebook page, Joel is a fan of the group Anything About Guns.

He bought a gun because everyone else had one.

Calvin Jones, 18, bought a 9mm handgun for $100 on a street corner in Omaha, Nebraska.
Two days after purchasing the gun Jones proudly showed his girlfriend, Bria, his new bulletproof vest. While showing off his new gun he inadvertently shot Bria, leaving her permanently blind.
When a judge asked him why he bought the gun Jones shrugged and said, "Because everyone else has one."

Gun Shot Inside Restaurant Injures Three

A group of eight or so people were seated at an Omaha restaurant Monday night. One man took out his gun and unintentionally fired it. The bullet hit the floor and three people suffered injuries when they were hit by bullet fragments and pieces of cement. A police spokeswoman said the man who had the gun may have been showing off the weapon to friends.
