Man unintentionally shoots and injures his 8-year-old son

 A 38-year-old Windsor, Colorado man was handling a gun inside his house when he unintentionally discharged the weapon.  The bullet hit his 8-year-old son who was in another room.  The boy was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The injury was not life-threatening. 

Police are still investigating the incident and have not said if any charges will be filled against the father. 

Motorcyclist unitentionally shot when handgun goes off during crash

A 60-year-old Pennsylvania man was riding his motorcycle in Black Hawk, Colorado when he was hit by a Chevrolet sedan. As he was thrown from his bike, a handgun he was carrying unintentionally discharged, shooting him in the chest.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Denver hospital. Police recovered his handgun at the scene.

The driver of the sedan fled the scene. Police were able to locate him a short time later and arrested him for the hit-and-run.

Gun unintentionally discharges at Colorado Springs gun show

A vendor at a gun show in Colorado Springs, Colorado was setting up his products when one of his guns unintentionally discharged.  The bullet hit the floor and  "shattered upon impact, resulting in no damage and no injuries," said police.

The vendor said the weapon was test fired earlier in the week because it had been returned to him as defective  After test firing the weapon, the vendor removed the magazine but neglected to check to see if there was a bullet left in the chamber.   The vendor said the weapon discharged when the back of the gun was bumped during set up.

The vendor faces charges of prohibited use of a weapon and was asked to leave the gun show. 

The organizer of the gun show said that these unintentional discharge incidents happen occasionally at gun shows and in homes.  He said he doesn't see any reason to change safety procedures at future shows.

Young mom unintentionally shoots and kills herself

A 25-year-old Fountain, Colorado woman was found unconscious inside the bedroom of her home.  According to police, she unintentionally shot herself in the abdomen.

She was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries.

The only other person in the house at the time of the shootings was the victim's young child.  Police are withholding the name of the victim until they notify the woman's family.

Stepfather unintentionally shoots and kills daughter thinking she was a burglar

29-year-old Daniel Meade, of Colorado Springs, Colorado shot his 14-year-old stepdaughter, Kiana O'Neil, about 6 a.m. as she was crawling though a window in their home. Meade thought the girl was a burglar.
Police were on the way to the home at the time of the shooting, having received a burglary in progress call. When they arrived they found Kiana with a gunshot wound.  She was taken to the hospital where she died soon afterwards.
Meade is a 10-year Army veteran who enlisted and ascended to the rank of sergeant first-class.  He is the recipient of a Bronze Star and is currently stationed at Fort Carson.
Police are still investigating and have not yet filed any charges.  Colorado has a "Make My Day" law that allows residents to use deadly force inside their homes if they believe an intruder is intent on harming them or committing a crime. 

Man unintentionally shoots himself and his roommate with newly purchased gun

24-year-old Josheph Gunderson, of Colorado Springs, Colorado was at home around 6:30 Tuesday evening, examining a 9mm semi-automatic handgun he had just purchased.

According to reports, Gunderson unintentionally discharged the weapon, shooting himself in the left palm.  The bullet continued on and then struck his roommate, who was standing nearby, in the right arm and left side.

Both men were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Gunderson has been charged with prohibited use of weapons.

It was the first time he ever handled a gun and he unintentionally shot & killed someone

21-year-old Benjamin Brown was visiting with friends in the basement of a home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Brown told police he found a handgun under the couch cushion he was sitting on and when he tried to set it on a table, he fumbled the weapon.

When he tried to catch the gun he unintentionally discharged the weapon. He then ran to his vehicle and hid the handgun underneath a seat.

The bullet struck 20-year-old Logan Treguier in the chest. Treguier died at the scene.

Brown told police he had never handled a gun before, that he had no firearm training and he had never shot a gun before the tragic shooting.

Brown was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Teen unintentionally shot and killed while playing prank on friend

18-year-old Premila Lal, of Longmont, Colorado was with her 12-year-old cousin when they decided to play a prank on her brother, Praveen, and her friend, 21-year-old Nerrek Galley. Premila and her cousin sneaked into the house where Galley was staying, hid in the closet and made noises to scare Galley and Premila's brother.

According to news reports, when they heard the noises Galley gave Praveen a handgun and he took another gun and the pair began to search the house. Premila jumped out of the closet startling Galley, who shot her.

Galley and others rushed Premila to the hospital. Galley carried her into the emergency room. Premila died a short time later.

Galley has been arrested and charged with child abuse, reckless endangerment and permitting a juvenile to have a fiream. None of these charges are directly related to the shooting. Police are still deciding whether or not to charge Galley in Premila's death.

Man misses squirrel, shoots neighbor instead

70-year-old Gregory Watson, of Black Forest, Colorado, was trying to shoot a squirrel in his yard. Watson missed and instead the bullet struck his 67-year-old neighbor who was working nearby.
The victim was shot in the arm. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.
Watson was charged with third-degree assault and prohibited use of a weapon. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Woman unintentionally shoots and kills herself while showing off her new assault rifle

22-year-old Anastasia Adair, of Federal Heights, Colorado, is described in one news report as a "new gun enthusiast." Anastasia was with her husband and some friends in the garage when she went upstairs to get her recently purchased assault rifle to show to her friends.
As she was walking back down the stairs into the garage she reached to hand the rifle to her husband, Shane, when the gun unintentionally discharged.
Anastasia was shot in the head. She was taken to the local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
According to police, the couple had been firing the rifle the day before and Shane told investigators the gun had a light trigger pull. The police did not identify the specific model but said it was an AK-47 type rifle.

Man unintentionally discharges gun in Chinese restaurant, almost shoots customer

28-year-old Michael Swensen was at a Chinese restaurant in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. While he was in the restroom he unintentionally discharged his handgun, sending a bullet through the bathroom wall into the dining area.
A family eating in the restaurant narrowly missed being shot.
Police took Swensen into custody. He could face a number of charges including prohibited use of a weapon.

Woman shot in both legs after dropped handgun discharges

A Colorado Springs, CO woman was getting into the passenger seat of her boyfriend's car when she knocked a handgun off the seat. When the loaded gun hit the floor it unintentionally discharged, shooting the woman.
The bullet passed through both of her calves. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
No one was charged in the shooting, but her boyfriend was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant.

Fort Carson soldier unintentionally shoots another soldier; PA police sergeant unintentionally shoots himself in the foot

21-year-old Zachary Clay and 18-year-old Reid Potwin, both soldiers stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado, and some other friends had finished target practicing at a home shooting range in eastern Colorado.
Clay was cleaning his gun, manipulating the slide of his .40 caliber handgun, when he unintentionally discharged the gun. Potwin was shot in the leg.
Potwin was flown to the hospital in Colorado Springs for treatment of a non life-threatening injury.
A 23-year veteran of the Upper Gwynedd Township Police in Pennsylvania unintentionally shot himself in the foot during a firearms training in Hatfield Township.
Sgt. Stephen Gillen was removing his handgun from his holster when he unintentionally discharged the gun, shooting a round into his left foot.
Gillen was conducting his annual firearms training and was under supervision of two certified range instructors.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Two injured at University of Colorado when staffer with concealed weapons permit unintentionally fires gun

An unidentified staff member of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Colorado took out a gun in his office and unintentionally discharged the weapon.
The staffer and another person in the office were injured. While the university has not released the details of the injuries neither person had to be hospitalized.
The staff member is on administrative leave.
In March, the Colorado Supreme Court struck down the University's ban on guns on campus. Starting this semester those with concealed weapons permits were allowed to bring guns onto the campus. The staff member in question had a concealed weapons permit.
Other recent unintentional shootings on college campuses include:
- A criminal justice professor at Long Island University in New York, unintentionally shot himself while standing in the hallway outside of class.
- A student at Weber State University in Utah, unintentionally shot himself while walking across campus.
- A sophomore at Florida State University was shot and killed at a fraternity house when a student showing friends his rifle unintentionally discharged the gun.

Woman trying to learn how to handle a gun unintentionally shoots her husband

Jacob Cherry, of Colorado Springs, Colorado was cleaning his handguns when he started to show his wife how to safely handle a gun. During the lesson on safety, his wife unintentionally discharged the gun.
Cherry was shot in the left hand and left leg. He was taken to the hospital and is listed in good condition.
Police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been filed.

Soldier unintentionally shoots self in knee, dies

38-year-old Charles Lacy was a Special Forces soldier stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado. He was sitting in a recliner cleaning a gun when he unintentionally discharged the weapon. The bullet hit him in the knee.
Lacy was taken to the local hospital where he died of his injuries.
"Anybody else should have survived a shot in the knee," said a police spokeswoman. "But this hit his artery. It was just a tragic accident."
Lacy had received numerous commendations during his military career. His deployments included Niger and Haiti.

Man showing off gun in hotel room unintentionally shoots gun wounds man in room next door

26-year-old Zachariah McCullough, of Grand Junction, Colorado was in a hotel room with friends at the Mesa Inn drinking beer and watching a football game. He pulled out .41-caliber Ruger revolver and started showing off the gun.
According to records, "Zach was displaying and boasting about the firearm and witness told him to unload it. Zach was manipulating the firearm when it suddenly discharged and blew a large hole in the south wall."
The bullet pierced the north wall of the room next door, blasting through a mirror. The man staying in the room, Juan Lara, was injured by shrapnel in his right shoulder.
McCullough fled the scene and was later located at his home by police. He denied any knowledge of the incident.
According to a statement from the police officer, "I told him that in a hypothetical situation where one discharged a firearm into a neighboring room in a motel, a reasonable human reaction to such a mishap would be that of concern that someone might have been hit."
McCullough later admitted the shooting. He was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm and prohibited use of weapons. According to his lawyer, McCullough is the father of five children and his wife is expecting a sixth child.

Woman unintentionally discharges gun, hits tv in apartment below

25-year-old Amy Walter, of Colorado Springs, Colorado picked up a handgun and unintentionally discharged it. The bullet went through the floor of her apartment and into the apartment below.
Shirae Hines, who lives in the apartment below Walter, had just settled down with her kids to watch television when the bullet came ripping through the ceiling and hit her flat screen TV. Hines called the police who questioned the three people in the apartment above.
Walter was arrested and charged with several misdemeanors.

Man unintentionally shoots himself at gun range

71-year-old Wayne Harrison, of Greeley, Colorado was at the Galeton shooting range, practicing with his .357-caliber handgun. While attempting to put the gun into a shoulder holster he unintentionally discharged the weapon, shooting himself in the stomach.
Harrison was alert when deputies arrived on the scene. He was airlifted to the North Colorado Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.

22-year-old looking at handgun unintentionally shoots and kills 27-year-old

22-year-old David McRea, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was with a group of people standing on a porch when a woman handed him a semi-automatic handgun to look at. According to reports, McRea was inspecting the gun when he hit the trigger and unintentionally fired the weapon.
The bullet hit 27-year-old James Crouch in the chest. Crouch was taken to the hospital and later died of his injuries.
McRea told police he had no argument with Crouch and in fact they didn't even know each other. McRea has been arrested on charges of second degree assault and manslaughter.
A neighbor said Crouch was a military veteran and owned several guns. "Jimmy was a nice, down-to-earth sociable guy," he said. "He certainly didn't deserve this to happen to him."
