13-year-old Shot and Killed While Playing with Gun

 A 13-year-old Grand Rapids, Michigan boy was shot and killed Saturday night around 10:30 p.m. He and his friend were playing with a 45-caliber handgun when the gun was discharged, striking the teen in the chest. 

The boy, also 13, who unintentionally discharged the weapon had taken the gun from his grandfather's bedroom. The grandfather told reporters that he stored the weapon in an unlocked dresser drawer. He expressed sympathies for the family of the teenager killed. 

The teenager who pulled the trigger was taken in to custody. The grandfather, who negligently left the gun unsecured thus allowing the boys to gain access, was not.  

Teen Unintentionally Shot and Killed While Live on Instagram

18-year-old Dylan Hemphill and his friend were in the living room of the friend's house in Detroit, Michigan.  They were showing off money and a rifle while live on an Instagram video.  The friend put his finger of the gun's trigger and unintentionally discharged the weapon. Hemphill was struck in the back of his head.

According to reports, Dylan's mother said of the boys, "They're close friends. They're like brothers. I treated that boy like he was a son of mine."

Dylan died at the house.  His friend was arrested and is in police custody.

Another recent shooting was captured live on Facebook.  Devyn Holmes, 26, and two others were sitting in a vehicle in a parking lot in Houston, Texas playing with two guns.  According to reports, in the video Cassandra Damper can be seen waving a handgun.  "Hey man, you're making me nervous," Devyn said.

Another person in the car is heard saying, "She got no clip, bud." But seconds later the gun discharged, hitting Devyn in the side of the head.   Authorities report that Devyn is brain dead and on life support.

Cassandra was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence. Police say she tried to wipe off any gunshot residue that might have been on her hands.  She is free on $2,500 bond.

73-year-old Woman Shot and Killed by Neighbor Who Was Target Shooting

A 73-year-old woman was standing in the kitchen of her home in Riley Township, Michigan.  Her husband reported that he heard a "loud crack and his wife collapsed to the floor." He discovered his wife had been shot. 

The woman was rushed to the local hospital where she died of her injuries.

Police determined that the bullet came from a neighboring property where a 21-year-old man was target shooting.  He was shooting at a berm he had built with a gun that has a range of longer than a mile and a half. 

Police say the young man is cooperating with the investigation. 

Boy finds keys to his grandfather's gun safe, takes gun, unintentionally shoots and kills sleeping woman

A 12-year-old Kalamazoo, Michigan boy, who investigators said is "mentally impaired," found the keys to his grandfather's gun safe, unlocked the safe, removed and loaded a shotgun.

According to his grandfather the boy "got up before anybody this morning at 5:30 a.m. He said he was in my pocket trying to get change and he found the gun safe key. It's always locked up, and I always have the key on me."

The grandfather said that when the boy tried to unload the shotgun he unintentionally discharged the gun.  The pellets went through a nearby closet wall and struck a 28-year-old woman who was sleeping in the living room.

The grandfather said "we turned the light on and we could see all the blood. It was only minutes. She was still breathing, but by the time the police got here, she'd passed away."

The boy is staying with a family member.  The grandfather said his grandson is an apprentice hunter and has used guns before.  He said the boy "handled guns very safely and wouldn't touch a gun unless he was told it was okay to pick it up." He added that the boy "doesn't realize what he's done."

Michigan woman fatally shoots herself while adjusting gun in her bra holster

55-year-old Christina Bond, of St. Joseph, Michigan, was adjusting the handgun in her bra holster on New Years Day when she unintentionally discharged the gun. The bullet struck Christina in the eye.  She was airlifted to a hosptial in Kalamazoo where she died the next day.

According to new details of the incident that were just released, officials report "she was having trouble adjusting her bra holster, couldn't get it to fit the way she wanted it to.  She was looking down at it and accidentally discharged the weapon."

According to her obituary, Christina joined the Navy out of high school, served two terms as an active Military Police, and was an administrator for the Road to Life Church.  She is survived by her two sons and six grandchildren.

Man wearing only a towel and carrying a gun takes three small children to get pizza, unintentionally discharges gun

27-year-old Phillip Engle, of Muskegon Township, Michigan, told police he took four hits of acid before showing up at Happy's Pizza wearing only a towel and carrying a handgun.

Engle had three children with him - ages 6,4 and 3.  According to police reports, Engle stood outside the business and pounded on a glass window, smashing the glass. He also unintentionally discharged his .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun in the process, damaging the door to the business.

After the gun went off, Engle walked back to his home. Police arrested him there when they found him sitting on the porch still holding the gun.

Child Protect Services were notified and Engle was arrested and charged with four misdemeanors: malicious destruction of property; careless discharge of a firearm causing property damage; reckless use of a firearm; and possession of a firearm while under the influence.

Police also found evidence that Engle had fired a gun inside his vehicle, damaging the interior.  However, it isn't clear when that gunfire incident occurred in relation to the Happy's Pizza incident.

Man unintentionally shoots and kills himself trying to demonstrate gun safety

A 36-year-old Independence Township, Michigan man was trying to demonstrate gun safety to his girlfriend. The girlfriend told police that the man had been drinking all day and was explaining to her that his three handguns are safe when they aren't loaded.  To demonstrate this, he placed the guns against his head and pulled the trigger. 

When he pulled the trigger on the third handgun, it discharged.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police report that there were three children, ages 7, 10 and 12 in the house at the time but they did not witness the shooting.

The sheriff commented that he had "never heard of anyone testing out the safety of a gun by pointing at their head and pulling the trigger."

Police are not yet releasing the man's name and continue to investigate the incident.  The medical examiner has ruled the death a suicide.

Husband showing friends how to clean gun unintentionally shoots his wife

60-year-old General Holiefield, of Harrison Township, Michigan and several other couples had gone to the shooting range in Roseville earlier in the day.  According to police:

"They were sitting around the kitchen table and Holiefield was cleaning his gun. It's a .45 caliber Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun. While he was sitting at the kitchen table, he was showing the other persons in attendance how to clean the gun. At one point, he was trying to clear the gun, make sure the gun was clear of all ammunition, and it in fact had a round in it. He pulled the trigger, the gun discharged and a single round went across the room and struck his wife in the abdomen. She had a through-and-through gunshot wound through her abdomen, her mid-section. The round then went through her and into the window blinds behind her."

The victim, 50-year-old Monica Morgan, was rushed to the hospital for surgery. She is in serious condition but is expected to survive.

Police are investigating the incident. The matter will go to the prosecutor's office for consideration of charges. Holiefield is currently the UAW Vice President

Man target shooting in his yard shoots 7-year-old neighbor standing next to her backyard pool

7-year-old Abby Wrobel, of Tekonsha, Michigan was in her backyard, standing on the deck of her pool, when she was shot in the arm.
Abby's neighbor, who remains unnamed, was target shooting in his yard with his 9 mm handgun when he fired a shot that missed the target and traveled 200 yards across a cornfield and struck Abby.
"It felt like a firework was going inside my arm," said Abby.
Abby's mother told reporters that the bullet barely missed hitting her daughter in the chest and whizzed right by her 2-year-old sister's head who was standing next to her.
Police are planning to charge the man with reckless discharge of a firearm causing injury. The man's wife said he is extremely shaken up by the accident.

Woman unintentionally shoots herself inside Detroit's Motor City casino

A 29-year-old woman unintentionally shot herself in the leg early Tuesday morning inside the Motor City casino in Detroit, Michigan.
Reports are sketchy but indicate that the unidentified woman had a gun in her purse that unintentionally discharged shooting her in the leg. She was taken to the hospital where she is listed in stable condition.
One witness told reporters, "People started running and the guard told us to move out of the way, to go to the back of the casino because somebody was in there shooting."
A spokesperson for the casino said the woman had a concealed weapons permit but added that it is still illegal for someone to bring a gun into the casino.
Police are still investigating the incident.

3-year-old finds gun under parent's bed, shoots himself

A 3-year-old Pontiac, Michigan boy was playing in his parent's bedroom when he found an unlocked, loaded .40-caliber Glock handgun in a holster under the bed. He unintentionally shot himself in the mouth.
The boy was taken to the local hospital and then transferred to a larger facility. He has injuries to his mouth and face and lost some teeth but is expected to recover.
The father told police the bedroom door is usually locked but they were moving some things around the house and left the door unlocked.
The 35-year-old man has a concealed weapons permit but authorities are recommending to the licensing board that it be suspended.

Woman killed by stray bullet at city's Fourth of July fireworks show

A 34-year-old Lansing, Michigan woman was at Adado Riverfront Park waiting for the city's Fourth of July fireworks show when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet.
Police were first notified at 9:45 p.m. that the woman was having a seizure. It wasn't until after she arrived at the hospital that it was discovered she had been shot. She died of her injuries the next morning.
Police are confident that the bullet that killed her was not fired from within the park.
At the request of her family, the woman's name has not yet been released.
Mayor Virg Bernero issued a statement calling the shooting "a senseless act of violence." He added that "it is a shock to us all that something like this could happen after we took such extensive precautions to keep everyone safe. Yet an innocent bystander was still killed by the reckless discharge of a firearm."
Police do not have any suspects and are asking anyone with information to please contact them.

19-year-old unintentionally kills friend while shooting at gun range

Four friends, three 19-year-old males and a 16-year-old female, went to the Livingston Conservation & Sports Association's gun range in Brighton Township, Michigan. One of the males was shooting an AK-47 when the gun jammed.
According to the sheriff, the gun had been malfunctioning but the owner had the gun serviced and wanted to try it out. After firing it a few times the gun jammed again.
The owner was trying to fix the gun when he unintentionally discharged the weapon. The bullet hit 19-year-old Charles Kimball, of Howell, Michigan, who was standing about 12 feet down range. Kimball was killed instantly.
The sheriff reported that the teens were not members of the gun range and did not have permission to be there. Prosecutors will decide what, if any, charges are filed.

Concealed Weapons Permit Holder Unintentionally Shoots Himself in the Penis

A 45-year-old Birmingham, Michigan man was legally carrying a .40 Glock handgun while working on his job as a heating and cooling repairman. The man had a concealed weapons permit. He had the gun tucked in the waistband of his pants. As he arrived at a house he went to take the gun out of his pants and leave it in the van.
In the process he unintentionally discharged the gun. According to police the bullet went through the man's penis and lodged in his leg.
His partner asked him if he shot himself but the man was just stunned and couldn't talk for 10 to 15 seconds.
He was taken to the hospital for surgery and is expected to recover.
Prosecutors are reviewing the case to see if charges of reckless discharge of a firearm will be filed.

Gun fight over who makes the best Kool-Aid leaves two bystanders injured

A group of teens were hanging out in the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit when two of them started arguing about who made the better Kool-Aid. The argument escalated and the two men both pulled out guns and began firing at one another.
However, both men missed one another and hit two innocent bystanders instead. One of the bystanders was hit in the wrist, the other in the buttocks. Both men were taken to the hospital, treated and released.
Police are searching for the shooting suspects, one of whom was seen driving off in a purple 2007 Impala.
Police called the situation "utterly ridiculous, but they've seen worse."

New bride gives husband handgun as gift, he then unintentionally shoots them both

Newlywed 22-year-old Tianna Gremore, of Marion Township, Michigan, gave her new husband, 20-year-old Dylan Gremore, a 9mm semiautomatic handgun as a gift. Dylan had the gun a little over a month when he was cleaning the weapon and trying to familiarize himself with the gun. According to police, "He made the major mistake of not taking the clip out, which was fully loaded, before he racked it."
Not realizing that this action had put a round in the chamber, Dylan pulled the trigger. The bullet hit his hand then grazed his forearm and leg before continuing on and hitting his wife's leg.
The couple drove themselves to the hospital where they were treated and released.

Intoxicated woman unintentionally shoots husband while investigating noise outside house

54-year-old Connie Tolbert and her husband, 52-year-old Darryl Tolbert of Three Rivers, Michigan had both been drinking at their home when they heard a suspicious noise outside their home.
Darryl told Connie to get her gun, a .380-caliber handgun, and the two went outside to investigate. While the couple was standing about three feet apart Darryl made a motion toward his wife that prompted her to fire her gun. Darryl was wounded in the right shoulder. He was treated and released at a local hospital.
Connie was arrested and charged with use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, careless discharge of a firearm causing injury and three other firearm charges.
"I think alcohol is definitely the main factor," said a police spokesperson.

Customer and Dealer Unintentionally Fire Gun at Gun Show, Three Injured

A customer was looking at a semi-automatic handgun at a gun show at the Gibraltar Trade Center in Mount Clemens, Michigan when he unintentionally discharged the gun. The gun dealer took the gun back and was inspecting it when he also unintentionally discharged the gun. Two women and a 10-year-old girl were struck by fragments and received minor injuries. They were treated at the gun show.
The trade center's management has banned the gun dealer from future gun shows. Authorities are reviewing the incident to determine if charges will be filed.

Man who sleeps with gun under pillow unintentionally shot by wife while getting ready for bed

A 48-year-old Battle Creek, Michigan man and his 46-year-old wife were getting ready for bed. The man owns several guns and sleeps with a pistol under his pillow. As the couple went to go to their bedroom the wife picked up a 9mm semi-automatic handgun from an end table intending to carry it into the bedroom. She thought the safety on the handgun was on, but when she picked up the gun and grabbed the trigger the gun discharged shooting her husband in the knee.
They both told police that the shooting was an accident. Police are seeking a warrant for reckless discharge of a firearm.

Quran-burning Florida preacher unintentionally fires gun in Michigan parking lot

59-year-old Terry Jones, the minister of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida was in Michigan trying to put together an anti-Muslim rally. Jones gained national recognition for threatening to burn the Quran on the anniversary of 9/11. Last month his church held a mock trial, declared the Muslim text guilty of crimes, and burned a copy of the holy book.
Jones was getting in the passenger side of his car after giving an interview at a Southfield, Michigan television studio, when his .40-caliber Taurus handgun unintentionally discharged. According to a police spokesperson, "Officers heard a gunshot, approached the vehicle, asked Mr. Jones is he was okay. He was, and they also observed he had a gun in his hand."
Both Jones and his driver had guns on them. They both have concealed weapons permits from Florida which are recognized in Michigan. When asked about the incident Jones told reporters that he had been up since 4:30 a.m. and firing his gun was "an accident."
