4-year-old shoots uncle with gun he found on the floor

A Milwaukee, Wisconsin man told police he was going to the gun range and that the gun he was planning on using was on the floor when his 4-year-old nephew found it.

The boy picked up the gun and unintentionally discharged it, shooting his uncle in the stomach.

Police did not report on the extent of the injuries but did indicate that the investigation is ongoing.

3-year-old shoots himself with gun his mother bought for protection

3-year-old Kevin Donald, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was playing in his mother's car when he found a loaded, unlocked gun in the glove compartment.  He began playing with the gun and discharged the weapon, shooting himself in the head.  He was rushed to the hospital where he remains in critical condition. According to reports, doctors are waiting for the swelling of his head to go down before doing surgery.

Donald's mother said she kept the gun in the car for protection.  She didn't keep the gun in the house on purpose, thinking it was safer in the car.  "This is the ghetto," said Kevin's aunt. "Anywhere you go there's someone trying to take something from you."

Kevin's aunt speculates the boy thought the gun was a toy. "He was curious. He probably thought it was a toy.  It was a little gun.  It didn't have a safety."  She added that Kevin's mother is a responsible gun owner and says what happened is a tragedy and something that was unexpected. "She has her license [to carry a loaded gun in public]," the aunt said. "She didn't just buy the gun. It's not a new guns. This was never meant to happen."

Man unintentionally shot through apartment ceiling

A 32-year-old West Bend, Wisconsin man was lying on his couch when he was struck by a bullet fired from the apartment below. According to police the bullet traveled through the ceiling of the apartment and into a second floor unit. The man suffered a laceration to his abdomen. "He was bleeding pretty bad," said a witness.

Police determined that a 20-year-old resident in a lower apartment had negligently discharged an AR-15 rifle while handling the weapon. The man reportedly told neighbors he was cleaning the weapon when it went off.

A neighbor told news reporters that he stayed with the victim until help arrived on the scene. He says the suspect was there as well, and kept apologizing for the incident.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

The 20-year-old was arrested and charged with injury by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon. He was also charged with possession of a switchblade knife.

5 kids unintentionally shot while playing with shotgun

A group of kids were in the basement of a local home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, handling a loaded shotgun when one of the kids unintentionally discharged the weapon.

The bird shot struck five kids, ranging in age from 11 to 17.  All were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police say they are investigating the incident but are not getting a lot of cooperation from those who were present when the shooting occurred.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett visited a local high school to talk with students about gun violence.  He stressed that adults who own guns must take responsibility for them. "If you have a gun you have to have it locked up so children don't have access to it," he said.

Former police chief unintentionally shoots himself in the hand

54-year-old Tony Barthuly of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, unintentionally shot himself in the hand while cleaning a handgun.
Barthuly is the former Fond du Lac police chief. He currently works for the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
Barthuly was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is listed in good condition. The incident is still under investigation but is being handled by the Sheboygan Police Department due to Barthuly's ties to the local police.

Off-duty police officer unintentionally discharges handgun inside Milwaukee mall

An unidentified off-duty police officer was shopping at the Southridge Mall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon. As he reached into his pocket looking for money to make a purchase he knocked a handgun that he had stuck in his waistband. Ultimately, he lost control of the weapon and it discharged. The bullet hit the marble floor and shattered. No one was injured.
As local newsradio WTMJ points out "the incident is also raising questions about the new concealed carry law." One shopper commented, "If you've got a police officer who can't handle it, and you put all these people with concealed carry and weapons in their pockets can you imagine the danger and the safety issues that are going to come about through this."
The mall manager says the no concealed weapons are allowed in Southridge Mall, even after the recent change in Wisconsin law.
Police are investigating the incident and report that the officer in question is getting "a review of proper safety protocol."

75-year-old man concerned about strangers in backyard unintentionally shoots himself after getting his gun

A 75-year-old Brookfield, Wisconsin man was concerned when he saw two strangers in his backyard at 7 o'clock in the morning. So he went and got his handgun. According to police the man "was carrying around the handgun and it accidentally went off and he shot himself in the leg." The man lives alone and was not able to call for help so he lay on the floor until 1:30 in the afternoon when he was found by a meal delivery service. He had lost a large amount of blood and was taken to the local hospital. He is expected to survive. Police had no information about trespassers or attempted burglaries in the area.

Trial date set for man who shot gun in motel room, killing man in room next door

An October trial date has been set for 48-year-old Lance Mueller, of Eagle Point, Wisconsin. He is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death last fall of 55-year-old Gregory Fleniken. According to the criminal complaint, Mueller had been drinking "quite a bit" with several co-workers in a motel room in Beaumont, Texas. He was also fooling around with a loaded handgun. Mueller pointed the gun at a co-worker, who ducked out of the way, and then fired the gun. The bullet went through the wall of the hotel room and struck and killed Fleniken as he was lying on a bed in the room next door.
According to police reports: "Mueller plugged the hole in the wall where the bullet went through with toothpaste. Then they went to the bar in the hotel. No one went to check on the occupant in the room next to them, nor did they notify the hotel or police. The next day, Mueller and a co-worker saw that the guy in the room next to them was dead when they saw police take Fleniken's body from the room."
Mueller was arrested in June in Wisconsin and appeared in court in Texas in July.

Man who unintentionally discharged gun in motel room arrested for plot to kill abortion doctor

63-year-old Ralph Lang of Marshfield, Wisconsin drove from his home to Madison planning to "lay out abortionists because they are killing babies." Lang was in a room at the Motel 6, loading his handgun when he unintentionally discharged the gun. According to the Madison police report "the round hit two doors, but there were no injuries. The man immediately told motel staff about the gunfire, saying it was an accident. He offered to pay for damages."
When police came to investigate, Lang told officers he was going to go to Planned Parenthood when it opened the next morning, find out who the doctor was who performed abortions and shoot the doctor in the head. According to the complaint, Lang told police he wanted to "line them all up in a row, get a machine gun and mow them all down." Police found anti-abortion documents, a .38-caliber handgun and ammunition in his room.
In 2007 Lang was arrested outside the Madison Planned Parenthood, telling police that everyone in the building deserved to be executed. Nurses told authorities they noticed Lang outside the facility last week. Lang told police he had been in Madison last week with a gun but was having "spiritual struggles" and was not "100 percent in sync with God" so he didn't shoot anyone.
The president of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin issued a statement saying, "Our primary concern is the health and safety of our patients, staff and volunteers. We have taken the security precautions necessary to continue our work."
In addition to charges of reckless endangerment for the discharge of the firearm, Lang has been arrested on federal charges of attempting to injure or intimidate a person who provides reproductive health services.

Drunk man, handling gun at 3 a.m., unintentionally shoots himself in the hand

26-year-old Cody Schara, of Reedsburg, Wisconsin unintentionally shot himself in the hand while handling a handgun in his home at 3 a.m. The bullet damaged a fingertip and went through his left hand below the pinky finger. No one else was present when the gun fired, although his mother was asleep in another room. Preliminary breath tests produced a 0.12 blood-alcohol level, 1 1/2 times the legal limit for driving. Schara has been charged with reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor that could result in a fine if found guilty.
Police noted that accidental shootings happen once or twice a year in Reedsburg. "Obviously, weapons and alcohol don't mix," said the police spokesperson.

10-year-old unintentionally shot by his father

A 10-year-old Delafield, Wisconsin boy was unintentionally shot by this father Sunday afternoon. Waukesha County Sheriff's Department say the father was cleaning a handgun when he unintentionally discharged the gun. The bullet struck his 10-year-old son in the abdomen.
The boy was flown by Flight for Life to the Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa. He is recovering following surgery.
The Sheriff's Department said a second child, an 11-year-old boy, was also inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. They are not releasing the names of those involved.

Boy unintentionally shot his sister, bandaged her up, sent her to school

A fourth-grade girl and her fifth-grade bother were alone in the their home in Green Bay, Wisconsin when they heard some noises outside and went and got a gun. The boy unintentionally shot his sister in the upper chest. The bullet went in at an angle by her throat, hit her vertebrae and exited under her arm. The brother cleaned the wound, bandaged his sister and put her to bed.
The next morning the girl went to school. A teacher noticed something was wrong and persisted in questioning the girl. Finally she told the teacher, "Yeah, I got shot last night."
Doctors say the odds of the girl escaping more serious injury were one in a million. She is currently in the hospital and can go home in a few days.
Police are investigating and say charges could be filed against the father if they find the gun was left unsecured.

4 people shot first day of deer hunting season in Wisconsin

Four hunters were shot in separate incidents across Wisconsin on the first day of gun deer hunting season.
One hunter was shot when another hunter was aiming at a deer. The victim was air-lifted to the hospital and is in serious condition.
A man in Marathon County was shot in the chest by another person in his hunting party. The wound is not life threatening.
A hunter in Door County was hit in the thigh and a hunter in Marquette County was grazed by a bullet.

Man takes deputy's gun during bachelor party, unintentionally shoots officer

A 27-year-old Green Bay, Wisconsin man has been charged in the unintentional shooting of a Sheboygan County deputy during a late night bachelor party.
Davis M. took the deputy's semiautomatic handgun from a shelf at a party where both were drinking. Davis thought the gun was unloaded as he held it at his hip in a cowboy pose. The gun discharged, the bullet striking the deputy in the left hand then passing through his left thigh and lodging in his right thigh.
Davis has been charged with felony second-degree reckless injury.

Man shot while boating on river

A 60-year-old Wisconsin man was enjoying a weekend pontoon ride when he was unexpectedly shot in the left shoulder. Police believe the gun was fired by someone on the river shoreline and say the shooting appears to be accidental.
The man is expected to make a full recovery. "The rib pretty much stopped the bullet," he said, "Higher or lower, would have hit the lung or got the spine."
The local sheriff estimates that the .22 caliber shot was capable of traveling a mile or more and reminds those using guns to take extra precautions and make sure they shoot in a safe manner.
