Child unintentionally shoots police chief with his own gun

57-year-old Frank Nucera is the police chief in Bordentown, New Jersey. He has been with the police department for 32 years and has been the police chief for 7 years.  Nucera was in the Bordentown Township Municipal Building on Tuesday when a child, described as a preteen, somehow got hold of the chief's holstered service weapon.

The child discharged the weapon and Nucera was shot in the leg.  He was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, the chief is also serving as town administrator in the small community.  He was inside the tax collector's office at the time.  The child's parent also had business in the tax office. 

It is unclear how the boy was able to get access to the gun.

Uncle showing off gun collection unintentionally shoots and kills 11-year-old nephew

11-year-old Hunter Pedersen, of Wayne County, New Jersey, was visiting his grandfather in Delaware Township.  Hunter asked his uncle, 34-year-old Chad Olm, if he could see his gun collection.  Olm lives in a room in the basement next to the laundry room.

Hunter, Olm and Olm's son, also 11, went into the basement where Olm keeps four guns in a gun safe. According to reports, Olm showed them his .357 Magnum handgun and let both boys handle the weapon and pull the trigger.  He also let both boys handle a .22 revolver and a 9 mm pistol.

The last gun he took out was a Glock 27, .40-caliber handgun with a laser sight. There was no magazine in the gun and Olm did not check to see if there was a bullet in the chamber. Olm pointed the laser on the ceiling, on the wall and then at his nephew. "Look, you have a red dot on your forehead," one of the boys said.

When Hunter reached for the gun, Olm pulled the trigger. Hunter was shot in the forehead and died at the scene.

Olm was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of children.

75-year-old man unintentionally shoots and kills himself while cleaning his gun

75-year-old Frank Kern, of Flemington, New Jersey, was cleaning and disassembling his .22 caliber rifle when he unintentionally discharged the gun. Kern was shot in the abdomen.
When police arrived, they found Kern lying in his garage.  He was flown to a medical center in Trenton but died the next morning of his injuries.
According to the county prosecutor's office, "This is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to the Kern family."

Deputy in Oklahoma unintentionally shot at gun range, detective in New Jersey unintentionally shoots himself in the leg

An Oklahoma County Sheriff's deputy was unintentionally shot at a gun range in Spencer, Oklahoma on Monday.
The sheriff's office was at the range for routine training when two deputies went inside a classroom. According to officials one of the deputies was checking his weapon when he unintentionally discharged the gun, shooting the other deputy in the leg. The deputy was taken to the hospital with a non life-threatening injury.
On Tuesday, a detective with the Gloucester County, New Jersey Prosecutor's Office unintentionally shot himself in the leg. The shooting occurred in the parking lot outside of the Gloucester County Justice Complex.
According to officials, the detective was getting into his car when he unintentionally discharged his weapon. He was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury.
The shooting caused a brief lockdown at a high school across the street from the Justice Complex.

Man may lose leg after unintentionally shooting himself

A 32-year-old Teaneck, New Jersey man was carrying a .45-caliber handgun in the waistband of his pants when the gun slipped. When he tried to catch the gun he unintentionally pulled the trigger and shot himself in the leg. The bullet ruptured his artery.
He was taken to the local hospital where he was stabilized and then transfer to a medical center. Doctors say due to the size of the bullet and the injury to his artery that the man might lose his leg.
Police are investigating the incident.

77-year-old man unintentionally shoots himself while cleaning out closet in his house

A 77-year-old Toms River, New Jersey man was cleaning out a closet in his home with his wife when he came across a loaded, unlocked .357 semi-automatic handgun that he had stored in the closet. He was in the process of checking the weapon when he ran into difficultly with the gun's slide. While trying to fix the problem he unintentionally discharged the firearm, shooting himself in the stomach.
He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment. His condition has not been released. Police say no charges have been filed because the man was in legal possession of the gun and the shooting was accidental.

Judge rules that blind gun collector who shot himself while cleaning his gun can keep his collection

A New Jersey Superior Court judge has ruled that Steven Hopler, a blind gun collector from Rockaway Township who unintentionally shot himself while cleaning a gun could keep his collection. However, Hopler must keep his six handguns stored in a safe pending a further evaluation of his alcohol use.
Hopler has been allowed to keep his NJ firearms ID card but can only fire his weapons while in the presence of an adult trained in the use of firearms.
After the unintentional shooting prosecutors sought to bar Hopler from owning weapons arguing that he stores his guns in an unsafe manner and that he kept weapons "unsecured throughout his house" and "negligently shot himself."
The judge said he had just been made aware of a 2003 incident in which Hopler pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after being ejected from a bar when he was extremely intoxicated. "My concern is whether Mr. Hoples uses alcohol," said the judge.

New Jersey police officers dies of unintentional shooting

An Atlantic City police officer died after unintentionally shooting himself in the face. The 31-year-old officer was sitting in his patrol car trying to install a rubber sleeve grip on his semi-automatic handgun. He removed the clip from the gun but accidentally discharged a bullet that remained in the chamber. The bullet struck him in the face.
Nearby police officers called for medical help but the officer was pronounced dead 15 minutes later.
He had been a member of the Atlantic City police force for two years. While at the Police Academy he received seven days of firearms training with Glock .40-caliber pistols.
