A passenger checking his firearm for shipment at the Salt Lake International Airport unintentionally fired the gun. The bullet hit the pavement and bullet fragments hit a skycap worker in the foot.
The passenger said he thought the Glock semi-automatic handgun was unloaded. The airport superintendent of operations said there is a set procedure for checking firearms at the airport.
"It has to be in a hardened, locked case with the weapon cleared and the ammunition stored separately. In this case, the procedure was not followed correctly."
According to news reports a witness hearing the gun shot "felt a few moments of fear and concern, saying a gunshot at the airport certainly grabs your attention."

Police officer trainee shoots himself during weapons practice
A Washington state reserve police officer candidate unintentionally shot himself during weapons training at the shooting range. The trainees were practicing pulling their guns from secure holsters.
According to officials, Reserve candidate Hebdon "accidentally lost control of his weapon as he pulled it from his holster. He lost his grip and tried to grab his gun instead of letting it fall and somehow one of his fingers got into the trigger and trigger housing." The weapon, a .45-caliber pistol, fired, and the bullet hit Hebdon in the abdomen before lodging in his right buttock.
Officials said it was an accidental discharge and does not necessarily mean Hebdon will fail the academy. "He's not losing his position but he will definitely be in remedial firearm instruction."

Professional athletes and guns
Former New Jersey Net Jayson Williams was sentenced today for the 2002 shooting death of his limousine driver. Williams was sentenced to five years in prison.
Williams admitted that on Feb. 14, 2002 he took a shotgun from his gun collection, failed to check to see if the safety was on or if the gun was loaded and wasn't paying attention to where the gun was aimed. When he snapped the gun shot it discharged, hitting his driver in the chest.
Unintentional shootings by other professional athletes have also made the news lately.
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla recounted how he was shot in the leg by his bodyguard during the offseason. "I was shooting [at a target range near his home in Nicaragua], then my gun just stopped," said Padilla. "It jammed. I looked for the bullet, and I couldn't find it. I gave it to one of my guys, and he couldn't find it, either. Then it went off and hit me in the leg."
"The doctor told me I was very lucky," Padilla continued. "If it would have hit me one inch on either side I would have been in serious trouble."
This week, Florida Marlins pitcher Jose Ceda revealed his secret to his team - two years ago he shot his best friend. While the details remain unclear, Ceda unintentionally shot his friend in the stomach. The bullet penetrated the spine. Ceda was under house arrest in his home in the Dominican Republic while authorities investigated the incident.
Last September, Super Bowl hero and former New York Giant Plaxico Burress was sentenced to two years in prison for violating New York gun laws. Burress was in a nightclub in Manhattan when he said he stumbled while going up the stairs. His gun slipped down in his jeans and as he reached to stop it from hitting the ground he hit the trigger and the gun fired a bullet into his leg.
This year Major League Baseball clubhouses will display new signs warning players that "individuals are prohibited from possessing deadly weapons while performing any services for MLB." The rules were adopted after the Burress incident but the signs have not been in place until this season.

In 1986 she killed her brother in an accidental shooting. In 1993 she was questioned about pipe bombs. In 2010.......
University of Alabama biology professor Amy Bishop sat in a faculty meeting for an hour before opening fire with a handgun. When the shooting stopped, three people were dead and three more were wounded.
Bishop left the room and called her husband to come pick her up. Her husband was not aware that anything was amiss.
News reports reveal that in 1986 Amy Bishop, then 19, shot and killed her brother with the family shotgun. At the time the shooting was ruled "accidental" and no charges were ever filed.
In 1993, while a student at Harvard, police questioned Bishop about two pipe bombs sent to the home of a Harvard professor. No one was ever charged with mailing the bombs.
A statement issued by the Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus read in part:
"This tragic incident shows once again that an angry individual with access to a deadly handgun can commit mass murder wherever people gather, in workplaces, shopping malls, churches, schools and yes, universities.
This random and horrific attack also demonstrates the futility and irresponsibility of trying to force loaded and concealed handguns onto college campuses as the solution to prevent mass shootings and gun violence. Such a radical policy would risk the safety and security of every faculty member and student on campus on literally a continual basis.
The gun lobby's predictable response to this rampage killing is to arm students and professors, believing in a mistaken 'wild west' fantasy where carrying loaded handguns results in killing armed perpetrators. Nothing could be further from the truth."

"Accidental" shooting inside a gun shop, "accidental" shooting outside a gun shop
A Georgia man was showing his guns to the owner of A to Z Guns when he tried to put one gun back into its holster and the gun went off. The bullet hit him in the leg. The injury was not life-threatening, unless you count his ego.
Meanwhile, a man in his 80s unintentionally shot himself in the leg outside of a gun shop in Florida. The man had stopped in the gun shop to buy batteries and was in the parking lot loading ammunition into his handgun when the gun went off. He was bleeding profusely and had to be airlifted to a trauma hospital.
The owner of the gun store stressed that the gunshot victim was not one of his customers. He said all of his clients are well trained. Given the fact that Florida does not require any sort of safety training before someone purchases a gun there was no indication of how the gun shop owner knew this about his customers.

He bought a gun because everyone else had one.
Calvin Jones, 18, bought a 9mm handgun for $100 on a street corner in Omaha, Nebraska.
Two days after purchasing the gun Jones proudly showed his girlfriend, Bria, his new bulletproof vest. While showing off his new gun he inadvertently shot Bria, leaving her permanently blind.
When a judge asked him why he bought the gun Jones shrugged and said, "Because everyone else has one."
