8-year-old boy unintentionally shot at gun range

8-year-old David Young, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was with his family at the Black Hawk Park firing range. He wandered across the firing line and was unintentionally shot in the head by his 5-year-old sister with a .22-caliber rifle.
At first officials thought it was a minor injury with an entrance and exit wound. But later at the hospital doctors discovered a lump on another part of his head and suspected the bullet fragmented and part of the projectile went deeper than first thought.
David was flown to Iowa City and taken to the Brain Trauma Unit. His conditions wasn't available.
Officials plan to meet at the sheriff's office to review safety at the range in light of the incident.

Oh the stupidity of allowing a 5yo to handle a gun, or to bring a 5yo and 8yo to a firing range! Sad that no one says so in either of the articles.

Baldr, I totally disagree with your conclusions. I take my twin eight year old daughters to the shooting range regularly, and they were shooting a .22 when they were five or six. They went hunting for the first time this year. It is a healthy, pro-family activity.

Upon a quick glance, I think the blog looks like it has some good points. I support the second amendment but that comes with civic duties. The fact that we don't have some kind of a safe storage law in this country is nuts. There are other nations with high firearms ownership that don't have near the problems we have with what this blog calls unintentional shootings and guns falling into the hands of criminals, largely due to safe storage laws. But getting that one past the NRA is pretty impossible.
